Description
Growing mushrooms on logs is as close as you can get to replicating how mushrooms grow in nature. This low-tech, low maintenance method works for a variety of species but is used most famously for Shiitake mushroom cultivation on logs.
Star-M’s mushroom bit features an auger point that draws the bit into the log as the drill bit rotates. This means that it can also be used with hand-powered bit-and-brace setups or even egg beater drills.
It’s large “hat” at the shank end is a depth stop that ensures your inoculated dowels remain close enough to the surface of the log to grow.
Once established, you can be harvesting from your mushroom logs for several years.
To get growing, you will need to supply your own:
- Hardwood log
- Shiitake-inoculated dowels (we recomend those available from Rootlab)
- Wax for sealing the dowels
- Drill
- Dark space to keep the log for six months between 13 and 19 degrees C.
